7 Buildings fires by detail of buildings and brigade area, Scotland (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), 2000 (Table 2a)

7.1 In 2000, almost half (49 per cent or 6,494) of total Scottish buildings fires occurred in Strathclyde. Similarly 50 per cent (4,692 fires) of all Scottish dwellings fires occurred in Strathclyde. Dumfries & Galloway accounted for 2 per cent (264 fires) of total Scottish buildings fires and 2 per cent (174 fires) of Scottish dwellings fires. Dumfries & Galloway and Highland & Islands were the only brigade areas to report no fires on construction industry premises.

7.2 In 2000, Scottish dwellings fires accounted for 13 per cent of total dwellings fires in the UK, a similar percentage to the 12 per cent of total buildings fires. Scottish dwellings fires accounted for 70 per cent of Scotland's total buildings fires. This compares with 62 per cent for England, 59 for Wales and 64 per cent for Northern Ireland. Of other buildings fires, the 133 fires in Scottish construction industry premises accounted for 28 per cent of UK fires in industrial premises.
