Leslie Evans was appointed in July 2009.

The post has responsibility for children, young people and families and learning and skills development in Scotland, covering the early years, schools, colleges and the university sector.

Leslie's previous postings in the Scottish Government include Director of Culture, External Affairs and Tourism; the financing and policy for Scotland's local government (including distributing £8 billion funding, electoral reform and council tax), Executive agencies and non-departmental public bodies; and the public service reform agenda.

Prior to joining the Scottish Government, Leslie spent 20 years working for urban and rural local authorities in England and Scotland.
